SDM Hosts Give Kids A Smile Day

Stony Brook, NY, August 26, 2014 – Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine hosted a “Give Kids A Smile Day” Summer Event on August 26th.

In a 3 hour period, 214 children (ages 1 – 17), from 119 families, were provided free dental screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatment, oral health education/home care and sealants as needed.  Sealants were provided to 74 children. Additionally, three children were given emergency dental services.

The providers were third and fourth year dental students, Pediatric Dentistry Residents,  clinical faculty, and dental assistants.

The parents were provided a dental summary which detailed the services received and the oral health care the child needs. They were encouraged to become a patient at the Dental Care Center or find a dental home close to their place of residence and obtain dental insurance.

Backpacks with school supplies, donated by Henry Schein Cares, were given to 200 school age children.

The children had the opportunity to show their bright smiles to two special guests, “Wolfie,” the SBU mascot and Ronald McDonald.  Also, as part of McDonald’s corporate support of Give Kids a Smile Day, they were provided free food coupons which was in each goody bag of oral health supplies that was given to the children participating at the event.

A special “thank you” to the Dental Care Center staff, students, residents, and faculty for a job well done!
